Gravity In Revit

Few days ago, I saw a question about 'Hanging Fixtures on Slopes'.

The mission was, the hanging part has to maintain vertical while the cover plate follows a sloped ceiling.

Like this?

Well, it's very natural in real world because of gravity, but  there is no gravity in Revit.

But there are some features which help to imitate it. The Keyword is 'Vertical'.

One Void Better than Array

'Array'is one of the most useful features when we make families. But it has some weaknesses. There are two representative I can list.

1. Makes families heavy and system slow.

2. Arrayed components can't be joined each other after loaded into projects.

Once I've made a 'Joinable Stair Family' couple of years ago.(I think most people would understand why I made it)

This looks work fine, but it's little bit heavy and can't have joined steps when they are increased in a project. (so I had to make steps array enough numbers in family editor.)

Line Weights for Custom Scale

Few weeks ago, a colleague of mine from the office asked me how to change the setting of line weights for custom scale.

To tell the conclusion first, you can't.

But there is something to be understood about it.

Manipulating Nested Family

Lintels are necessary when doors or windows are on a masonry wall.

Then, how can they placed in Revit?

1. Make another door family which has nested lintel family.

It's easy but two families for one same door because of only lintel? And how can make lintel schedule and tags for lintel? And if a wall type changes?

2. Place separated lintel family in a project. then easy to make lintel schedule.

But, finding, placing, aligning....it's so annoying.

Here is the way I use.

Trigonometric Function

Every forms can be defined with coordinates, dimensions, and angles. And these components can be found each other with formulas.

As it is known, trigonometric function is the most useful formula in this case.

See the graph below.

Values of sine and cosine are always between -1 and +1. It means any angle can be found with the value between 0 and 1(plus or minus).

There is a similar one in Revit.
